Who would have thought the steady decline of the McCain campaign would have seen this poor, old man degenerate into Joe McCarthy? He's had the most finely-polished public image of any of the pathetic pygmies™ or of anyone from the party of pathetic pygmies™. I mean I just saw him on the Daily Show bantering with John Stewart a couple days again... for the dozenth time. When he was caught taking $112,000 in bribes from Charles Keating-- in the savings and loan scandal that eventually cost taxpayers over $3 billion dollars-- he did an intense image makeover and re-invented himself as Mr. Morally Upright. The traditional media, for whatever reason, loved it and bought it and propagated it. They don't talk about his ties with the Arizona mafia and Joe Bonano or about his serial womanizing; they talk about what a decent man he is and how, independent and moderate and sage he is. Here's a joke he once told at a Republican dinner about a young girl: "Do you know why Chelsea Clinton is so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father."
This guy has had a very free ride for a very long time. Lately he's also been very desperate, trying to get back into the good graces of the far right of the GOP, the segment that will decide who the party's next presidential nominee will be. He's been fighting it out with a complete nothing, Mitt Romney, for the #3 slot. Romney is loaded and runs millions of dollars in advertising. McCain is broke and works hard for free media... by saying outrageous things.
Yesterday he decided to impersonate one of the worst villains in American politics, deceased Republican senator/alcoholic Joe McCarthy. Ana Marie Cox has been traveling around on the Forked Tongue Express with McCain and last night she couldn't believe what she heard from the doddering old imbecile; neither could his staffers.
"It's disgraceful, it's got to be retracted and condemned by the Democrats and MoveOn.org ought to be thrown out of this country, my friends."
Gee, I wonder if that includes me? I'm a member, a proud member of one of the very best and most patriotic, All-American, democratic political organizations in the country. Of course now McCain's campaign's campaign is trying to spin this as though he were a rational and sane politician. But CBS has the video of McCain doing his little demagogue thing for the base.
